CPD credit is generally calculated as 1 learning hour = 1 CPD Credit.  


You may round the total CPD up or down – for example, if the duration of the activity was 1.5 hours, you can claim 2 CPD credits.  If the duration of the activity was 1.25 hours, you can claim 1 CPD credit 


Some activities can attract a specific number of CPD credits, for example:


Planning CPD:

  • A standard 3 CPD credits are automatically assigned when you record your plan at the beginning of the Professional Competence Year in your CPDValet for Professional Competence
  • Review of your plan with a peer attracts 1 CPD Credit
  • End-of-year review and reflection on your plan attracts 1 CPD Credit

Practice Review: attracts a standard 10 CPD credits which are automatically assigned when you record your annual Practice Review in your CPDValet for Professional Competence

Work-Based Learning:

  • First-time preparation and delivery of a lecture, poster, presentation etc. = 5 CPD Credits
  • Contribution to a publication or research paper = 5 CPD Credits
  • Peer Review = 1 CPD Credit
  • Submission of your Plan before September 30 in the relevant Professional Competence Year = 2 CPD Credits

Accredited Continuing Education (CE): Accredited CE Activity includes attendance at relevant educational events, conferences, courses and workshops at local, national and international level. 


  • CPD is calculated as 1 hour = 1 CPD credit for courses, workshops etc.
  • Didactic events such as scientific meetings, conferences etc attract a maximum of 6 CPD credits per day


CE activity which is used to count for a doctor’s annual CPD requirement must be accredited in Ireland or in the State where it is delivered
