As you are aware, it is a legal requirement to fulfil the Medical Council Maintenance of Professional Competence requirements each year.

When you are completing the annual retention of registration application form, the Medical Council will ask you to declare (by selecting Yes/No) the following:


  1. That you are enrolled on a Professional Competence Scheme in Ireland and have paid the Scheme enrolment fee

        2. That your most recent Annual Statement of Participation demonstrates that you are meeting your maintenance of                   professional competence requirements.


            At the end of each professional competence year, the Medical Council will ask all Training Bodies for the                          registration numbers of all those who have not met the Scheme requirements.


Medical Council Annual Retention Form (ARAF) 


The Medical Council has asked us to let you know about the following changes to Question 1 in the Annual Retention Application Form (ARAF) which is used to renew your Medical Council registration. 


  • Professional Competence Scheme enrolment and CPD activity compliance components have been re-introduced. Doctors should respond openly and appropriately as to whether they have met the annual minimum CPD requirements for the Scheme Year 2020-2021. 


  • Trainee Specialist Division doctors will no longer be required to complete the declaration on maintenance of professional competence but should engage with other elements of the ARAF. 


  •  Doctors who restored to the register to assist in the COVID-19 effort will not be required to complete the Annual Retention Application Form as they are on the Medical Council Register for a defined period to assist with the COVID-19 effort.
