The Professional Competence year runs from 1 May to 30 April, and doctors are required to renew their enrolment annually to maintain compliance with Irish Medical Council requirements.
If you were enrolled on an RCPI Professional Competence Scheme during the previous scheme year, you do not need to submit a new application. You simply need to renew your existing enrolment.
How to renew your enrolment
To renew your Professional Competence enrolment for 2026–2027, follow these steps:
Visit the RCPI website and log in to your account.
Navigate to your Digital Hub.
Your Professional Competence renewal fee will be available within your account.
Select the outstanding fee and follow the instructions to complete your payment.
Once your payment has been processed, your enrolment will be renewed for the relevant scheme year.
RCPI issues annual renewal notifications to doctors, reminding them to renew their Professional Competence enrolment.
How much does renewal cost?
The annual Professional Competence enrolment fee is €250, which covers the scheme year from 1 May to 30 April.
If you are a Member or Fellow of RCPI or one of its Faculties or Institutes, and your subscription is up to date, you may be eligible for a discounted fee.
For further information, see How much is enrolment/renewal on a Professional Competence Scheme?.
Can I pay using another method?
In addition to online payment, RCPI offers alternative payment options, including:
Direct Debit: Complete the online Direct Debit Mandate.
If your Professional Competence enrolment is showing as Pre-Registered for 2026–2027, your renewal has not yet been completed.
Please log in to your RCPI account through the Digital Hub and check for your outstanding Professional Competence renewal fee.
Once your payment has been processed, your enrolment can be updated accordingly.
What if I was not enrolled last year?
If you were enrolled on an RCPI Professional Competence Scheme more than one scheme year ago, you will need to submit a new application rather than renew your previous enrolment.
For further information, see Enrol on a Professional Competence Scheme.
What happens if I do not renew?
Doctors registered with the Irish Medical Council in the Specialist, General or Supervised Divisions are required to maintain their Professional Competence, unless an applicable exemption applies.
Failure to renew your Professional Competence enrolment may affect your compliance with Medical Council requirements.
For further information, see What happens if I do not renew my enrolment?.
